In contrast, over-the-counter medications do not require a prescription and can be purchased directly by consumers. Controlled substances refer specifically to drugs that are restricted due to their potential for abuse and addiction but include both prescription and non-prescription medications based on their classification. Experimental drugs are those still undergoing clinical trials and have not yet been approved for general medical use, which also differentiates them from legend drugs that are already approved and in common clinical practice.
